Diamonds, Banned Books & Loyd Stanley Day

Diamonds, Banned Books & Loyd Stanley Day

Big Rocks in Little Rock.

We flew to Little Rock via Chicago on September 23rd. Our connections were extremely tight and like Saskatoon, flights into and out of Little Rock are, shall we say…limited? As a Canadian permanent resident, traveling on a foreign passport normally means that you get to take the express lines with your fellow Canadians and Americans- but for some strange reason this time (probably due to heightened airport security) I got sidelined to the manual entry line, and after not moving for about 15 minutes, I instructed Mike to make sure he doesn’t miss his connecting flight as by now it was becoming quite apparent that I wasn’t going to make it. Fortunately he listed and made it the the press meet & greet hosted by Stanley Jewelers Gemologists– our fabulous host for the first leg of the Southern Stars – Meet the Cutter Tour. I eventually made it to Little Rock early evening- but regrettably missed the early function- but at least got to take in some of the sights, sounds and IPA’s in Little Rock with the one and only- Laura Stanley.

Early morning on September 24th Laura and Mike appeared on KARK 4 News and a couple of hours later we boarded the bus along with 28 others and headed to the Crater of Diamonds State Park- a very entertaining and educational two hours’ drive, followed by a lunch presentation- before being unleashed to dig for diamonds. We got dirty, we got wet and we thought that at least one of our group would fine something other than gravel, but it was not to be. There were several diamonds discovered that day, but we left the park having caught just enough diamond fever to want to go back another time.

Game day…September 25th. Master Diamond Cutters’ first ever in-store diamond cutting and polishing event in the USA hosted by Stanley Jewelers Gemologists– and what an event it was as we also celebrated Loyd Stanley’s 75th birthday which included a mayoral declaration. It is always very informative to watch our Customers in their stores, away from the trade shows and conferences. A steady stream of Customers came through to try their hand at cutting and polishing a diamonds- including the first lady of Arkansas- Ginger Beebe who gave it a go. We’re still sifting through the hundreds of pictures, but if you are on social media, you can find a lot of  on our Facebook page. All in all, this event was probably one of the busiest we’ve ever had, I’m just not sure if all the Customers were there to meet the cutter or if it was just another day at Stanley Jewelers Gemologist? Later on that evening we got to paint a little bit more of the town including attending my first ever Banned Books Event. Yes, it seems that even in this day and age books are still being banned!
All good things come to an end, but it seemed St. Christoper may have gotten things messed up just a little as we were delayed 24 hours (something about a fire in Chicago). Fortunately, our hosts are extremely gracious, and we got to enjoy Little Rock and the company of the Stanley Family for a great Mexican meal and some great tequila. Early morning, we were one our plane back to Canada.

Thank you- we’ll to be back soon.
